- First find out which pipe and where the pipe is frozen.
- Make sure to turn off the main water supply line to prevent the water from blasting out once the pipe is thawed.
- Open all the faucets in your home/business.
- After opening all faucets in your home/business, if there is no water flow anywhere in the house/business the main line coming from the water meter may be frozen. Touch the meter and the adjacent exposed pipes. If they are very cold, they are probably frozen.
- If water flows in only one part of the house/business a pipe in an outside wall or crawl space is probably frozen.
- Once you’ve located the frozen pipe make sure to open the faucet all the way. Also, open hot water faucets to a slow flow in the house. This hot water flow may help thaw the frozen pipe.
- If the pipe will not thaw on its own the safest and neatest way to thaw it is by using a hair dryer, heat lamp, or household iron. DO NOT use a propane torch or other open flame! This will heat the pipe too quickly and may cause it to explode. Causing major water damage to your home/business.
- When thawing pipes with a hair dryer or similar heat source always work from an open faucet back toward the frozen area. This will keep steam from being trapped by ice and bursting the pipe. Make sure the faucet is open so you can see when the ice has melted.
- After completely thawing the frozen pipe and the water is flowing DO NOT completely close the faucet. Leave a trickle of water flowing to prevent refreezing.
